Born and bred in Oamaru, John Bean has been working with wood all his life. An accomplished joiner and carpenter by trade, his woodturning reflects the beauty and dangers of working in this medium. He has a passion for seeing what the wood reveals to himself and others, and his work continues to change, combining a range of other artistic media such as paint, metal and Oamaru stone. John has a pragmatic approach for his rationale for woodturning, “it helps me keep up my skills, keeps my mind and hands busy, gets me involved with the community and my wife loves the fact that it gets me out the house!”
